If not you, who? If not now, when?
I'm a confident person. I'm really proud of the life I've created and the person I am. Sure, I have loads of palm-to-forehead moments, but that means I'm taking risks.
Despite this confidence and risk taking, there's still a huge part of me that feels like certain things just aren't meant for me. Like life is a highway with different lanes and I'm supposed to stay in my lane. Things like:
- creating a groundbreaking new product or service that will affect the lives of millions
- writing a book that completely shifts the way people think about something
- marrying Ryan Reynolds (or Gosling. I'm not picky.)
If I had written this post 4 years ago, there would have been another thing on this list: Living in New York.
Do you ever fast forward in your mind to yourself in your 80's or 90's? I do. I picture myself 40 or 50 years from now, thinking back on my life. I wonder what my regrets would be. I've done this over the years and the one regret that always jumped to mind first was living in New York. Somehow I created the story long ago that living in New York wasn't for me. I didn't have the secret password. Stay in your lane, Amy.
3 years ago that all changed. I was living in San Diego and visiting New York often for work. During one of those visits, I had this peaceful, but very confident thought that I could actually live here. One of my favorite mantras popped into my head:
"If not you, who? If not now, when?"
Since when are dreams and "big things" intended for some and not others? What makes one person more fitting for success, love and magic than you? What is this mysterious hour or day we're all waiting for?
So I did it. I gave away and sold everything I owned and moved to New York with my life packed into nine boxes. My world exploded with more abundance and clarity than I ever thought possible. I felt like a dancer who finally found her rhythm.
What story do you tell yourself? What lane are you not allowed to cross over?
- Do you have a business idea, but you don't think you have the resources or talent to pull it off? You do.
- Do you want to find love, but feel like relationships are for everyone else and you're just meant to be single? You're not.
- Do you want to quit your job, move to New Zealand and farm sheep? You can.
Whoever you are and wherever you are right now, I want you to know that I believe in you more than you could ever believe in yourself. You are filled with unlimited opportunity and potential. The universe is just waiting for you to speak it and take action. There is power in words.
Fast forward - what might you regret not doing? Not trying? What little voice have you been ignoring? Take one small (or big!) step forward today.
- write it down on paper
- make a phone call to someone who can help you
- register the domain
There is no one more deserving or intended for success, love and magic than you. Go get it.
